Elephant Family confirmed earlier this year that King Charles and Queen Camilla will  “formally continue as Joint Presidents of Elephant Family”.  HRH Princess Eugenie of York as well as Sarah, Duchess of York, serve as patrons. (3)

 

 

 

It was in 2003 that the late Mark Shand, Queen Camilla’s brother, founded Elephant Family. He is remembered in a tribute posted on the 10th anniversary of his death on Instagram by the charity. (4) 

 

Dan Bucknall of Elephant Family:

“Mark was… he was our leader, our inspiration, he was the life and soul of Elephant Family and more than anything else in an organization that really… a tight-knit close family such as ours… and he was a really great friend to all of us. 

 I mean one of his great passions was Asian elephants, I mean he has always had a great love of India  and in the late 80s he went to India and on a whim helped rescue a female elephant Tara and traveled across Eastern India with her.

But it was during that journey that he realized the plight of the endangered Asian elephant and he resolved there and then to do something about it and went on to set up Elephant Family,  

He was always, always very hands-on and in the thick of it, really right at the very center of all of our fundraising events and whenever he traveled to India to visit the project then you know… then you really… he really came to life and you could really sense that this was his great passion and his great calling in life.  

We are all still very much coming to terms um with his death.  I mean it has really knocked us sideways. It has been a big shock to us all. So at the moment we are just still taking things one step at a time. But… but yes obviously we hope to continue to fulfill his vision and grow the charity in his memory.”
