As this World Elephant Day comes around again those of us who are concerned about the fate of our elephants can often become overwhelmed with the many things that still need to happen to bring our elephant populations back from the brink of extinction.
Thankfully we have great elephant organizations, of which World Elephant Day has made us aware, who are our boots on the ground, those individuals with the expertise and funding (thanks to our donations) to reverse the tragedy of our elephants who are being needlessly killed in the wild for their ivory tusks or suffering in captivity to provide humans the thrill of an up-close elephant encounter of any kind.
So what can we as individuals do to make a difference and help our elephants in 2019? World Elephant Day has some smart suggestions with their “How to Help Elephants” list which we, at Elephant Spoken Here always take to heart.
Our 2019 Promise to Help Elephants:
As consumers we must think about the impact a purchase or a product has on our elephants in the wild before we make a commitment to buy.
We can all take part in elephant conservation simply by changing the way we shop at the market or at the dry goods store. This year, for our elephants, let us:
“Be aware of elephant habitat.
*Do not buy coffee that is not fair-trade or shade-grown, nor products with palm-oil. These commercial crops are grown in plantations that have decimated elephant habitats.
*Only buy wood products that have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which promotes responsible management of the world’s forests – the natural habitat for elephants and other wildlife.”
-as suggested by World Elephant Day
Save our elephants in the wild
Help our elephants in captivity
For there cannot be a world without elephants.
Happy World Elephant Day!
